About Ji'an
Its distinctive landscape is also an archaeological map: the stone walls of Gungnae survive among present-day streets, while Hwando occupies a defensible mountain basin outside town. Goguryeo royal tombs and the Gwanggaeto Stele add a third, funerary dimension to the former capital. Start with the museum to understand how these separated remains fitted together before travelling between individual sites.
Under Han Wudi (汉武帝) the area belonged to Xuantu Commandery (玄菟郡). In 3 CE, Goguryeo moved its capital from Wunü Mountain City (五女山山城) to Gungnae (国内城) here, relocating again to nearby Hwando (丸都山城) in 209; the kingdom was based in the area for 424 years before its capital moved south to Pyongyang in 427. After Tang destroyed Goguryeo, the area passed successively under Balhae, Liao, Jin and Yuan control.
Ji'an lies at the southern foot of the Changbai Mountains, with forest covering about two-thirds of the city's area and ginseng and sika deer among its products. The average annual temperature is 6 degrees Celsius, with about 900 mm of precipitation. The Yalu River (鸭绿江), the China-North Korea border river, flows through the area, and the Yunfeng (云峰) and Shuifeng (水丰) hydroelectric stations on it are jointly owned by the two countries.
In 2004, the Goguryeo remains around Ji'an were listed together with Wunü Mountain City in Huanren, Liaoning, as the Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom on the World Heritage List, the only independently nominated World Heritage site in Northeast China. Ji'an was named a National Historical and Cultural City (国家历史文化名城) in 1994.
What to look for
- Gungnae's surviving urban stone walls, showing the position of the Goguryeo plain capital.
- Hwando's mountain setting and palace foundations, a counterpart to the city on the plain.
- The Yalu riverfront and the view toward Manpo across the international border.
