About Mount Jigong

The villas reflect the international community that used the mountain as a retreat in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Baoxiao Peak adds a natural landmark, its profile giving the mountain its rooster name. Combining the villa area with that rocky viewpoint makes the visit both architectural and scenic.

Mount Jigong is part of a branch of the Dabie Mountains (大别山), straddling the border between Henan and Hubei. Its main peak, Jigongtou (鸡公头), also called Baoxiao Peak (报晓峰), rises to 814 metres and is said to resemble a crowing rooster with its neck outstretched, giving the mountain its name. The scenic area covers about 287 square kilometres and is divided into six sections, including a summer villa area (避暑山庄).

The area was among the first scenic sites approved for opening to foreign visitors by the State Council in 1978, was listed among the first batch of national key scenic areas (国家级重点风景名胜区) in 1982, and was approved as a national nature reserve (国家级自然保护区) in 1988; it is also rated a 4A scenic area. In 2008 and 2009 it was twice named one of China's ten summer mountains (中国十大避暑名山).

The name, which means Rooster Mountain or Cockerel Mountain, is derived from its shape. It used to be a summer retreat for Western missionaries and, later, for Communist officials.
