About Kumtag Desert · Shanshan Scenic Area
Wind-shaped ridges, rippled sand and the changing light are the central attraction. The managed visitor area offers a way to see this landscape without treating the wider desert as an open driving route. This Shanshan site is distinct from the much larger Kumtag desert region farther east.
What to look for
- Dunes meet the edge of Shanshan’s oasis landscape.
- Ridges and fine surface ripples show the action of wind on sand.
