Setting and landscape
The name comes from the turtledoves (鸠鸟) that were once common here and from the local name for this reach of the Yangtze, the "Jiu river". Inside the district the Yangtze swings through a 90-degree bend from an east–west to a north–south course; the bend on the north bank is called Dalongwan (大龙湾, "Great Dragon Bend"). The land is flat with a few low hills, crossed by canals and dotted with lakes and ponds.
History
The district government places the Tianmen line of Li Bai's poem "Gazing at Tianmen Mountain" (望天门山) at Dongliang Mountain (东梁山). In the Song dynasty the Tianmen Academy (天门书院) stood at Daxin, now Daqiao (大桥镇); Emperor Lizong granted it a name plaque, and the district government lists it among the earliest academies in Anhui. The Wanchun polder (万春圩) was named by Emperor Renzong, and the scholar Shen Kuo (沈括) took part in its design.
In 1939 New Fourth Army troops led by Su Yu (粟裕) wiped out more than 300 Japanese soldiers at Guandoumen (官陡门). In the 1949 Yangtze crossing the "first boat" set out from Baimao (白茆镇). Xu Haifeng (许海峰), China's first Olympic champion, was born in Shenxiang (沈巷镇) in 1957. The district government traces its private economy to Nian Guangjiu (年广久) and his "Shazi" melon seeds (傻子瓜子) and calls him New China's first private trader.
What to see
The Fantawild (方特) theme-park business started in Jiujiang, and the company has built four parks in the district; the Wuhu Fantawild scenic area is a national 5A scenic area. Jiuzi Ancient Town (鸠兹古镇) is the district's 4A scenic area.
At Erba (二坝镇), Jiaoji Temple (蛟矶庙) marks the legend of Sun Shangxiang (孙尚香), wife of Liu Bei, whose body is said to have drifted upstream and stopped at Jiaoji hill. In today's Sculpture Park, the legendary swordsmiths Ganjiang and Moye (干将莫邪) are said to have taken stone to forge swords. "Jiaoji smoke and waves" (蛟矶烟浪) and "Chizhu blade" (赤铸青锋) are both among the Eight Views of Wuhu. Central Park, Fengming Lake Park (凤鸣湖公园) and the Dayanghan wetland park (大阳垾湿地公园) are newer places to walk.
Getting oriented
The Hefei–Wuhu, Wuhu–Xuancheng, Wuhu–Ma'anshan and Wuhu–Tongling expressways meet in the district, and the Beijing–Fuzhou, Nanjing–Anqing and Shangqiu–Hefei–Hangzhou high-speed lines pass through it; Wuhu North station (芜湖北站) is on the Shangqiu–Hangzhou line. The Third Yangtze Bridge and the Longwan Yangtze tunnel link the two banks. The district government calls the Zhujiaqiao foreign-trade wharf (朱家桥外贸码头) the last deep-water port going up the Yangtze.
