About Chaoyang Park
Its scale allows a visit centered on walking and waterside views rather than paid activities. The park also carries an Olympic connection: beach volleyball was staged here in 2008. Choose one lake-and-garden circuit at the outset and add recreation only if the relevant facility is operating and suits your group. The wider park landscape remains the organizing feature, while individual rides and seasonal events can change.
Chaoyang Park occupies the site of a former Prince's Palace. Construction began in 1984, and the park covers a total area of 288.7 hectares, including 68.2 hectares of water, and measuring roughly 2.8 kilometers long by 1.5 kilometers wide. The Beijing Pop Festival, featuring Chinese and international musical acts, began using the park in 2005. For the beach volleyball events of the 2008 Summer Olympics, a temporary stadium was built in the park using sand shipped in from Hainan island. A 208-meter Ferris wheel, the Beijing Great Wheel, was also planned for the park, but the project went into receivership in 2010.
What to look for
- Lake-and-garden landscape: compare broad water views with the more enclosed planted areas.
- Recreation setting: see how sports and leisure spaces are integrated into the larger urban park.
