About Beijing Botanical Garden
Its appeal extends beyond flower beds: the conservatory brings tropical vegetation and succulents indoors, while the grounds lead toward the old Wofo Temple and the wooded Cherry Valley. The temple's reclining Buddha and the Cao Xueqin Memorial connect botanical walking with Beijing's religious and literary history. Choose a few areas rather than treating both the North and South Gardens as one small park; they have different entrances, and individual attractions may have separate admission arrangements.
The North Garden is one of two parts of the China National Botanical Garden (国家植物园), chartered in 2022 alongside the South Garden, which is based on the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. While the South Garden concentrates on scientific research, the North Garden focuses on ex situ collection, popular science, and exhibition, with work on plant application, the conservation of rare and endangered plants, the collection and display of horticultural plants, and training in gardening and horticultural techniques.
Its collection includes about 6,000 species of plant, among them 2,000 kinds of trees and shrubs, 1,620 varieties of tropical and subtropical plants, 500 species of flowers, and 1,900 kinds of fruit trees and water plants. Display rooms cover commercial plants such as the triple-leaved rubber plant, cocoa, and coffee, as well as medicinal and aromatic plants and succulents; more than 300 varieties of orchid are kept, including a rootless species that absorbs water vapor and nutrients from the air through fine hairs.
