Setting and landscape

The district backs onto Lion Rock (獅子山), Tate's Cairn (大老山) and Tsz Wan Shan (慈雲山) to the north, with Kowloon Peak (飛鵝山) to the east. Lion Rock Park, about 5 hectares on Chuk Yuen Road, has a trail towards the 495-metre peak, whose outline resembles a seated lion.

Several place names have stories. Diamond Hill (鑽石山) was a quarry whose Chinese name means drilling out stone; the English name came from misreading the verb "drill" as the noun "diamond". Ngau Chi Wan (牛池灣) was first called Lung Chi Wan (龍池灣), and Lok Fu (樂富) was once Lo Fu Ngam (老虎岩), "tiger rock".

History

Po Kong village (蒲崗村), now San Po Kong, and Nga Tsin Wai village (衙前圍村) were founded in the Southern Song. Hong Kong's first civil airport, Kai Tak (啟德機場), opened in 1925 around today's San Po Kong. Wong Tai Sin became a district in 1969, and on 1 October 1979 it became one of the first four districts with metro stations when the early MTR system opened.

What to see

Wong Tai Sin Temple, at Chuk Yuen village, was founded in 1921, together with the Sik Sik Yuen (嗇色園) religious charity, after the Taoist priest Liang Yan Am brought a portrait of the deity from Guangdong in 1915; it opened to the public in 1956. The Home Affairs Department notes crowds before midnight on Lunar New Year's Eve for the first incense offering. The temple was rated a Grade 1 historic building in 2010, and Wong Tai Sin belief and customs became national intangible heritage in 2014.

Chi Lin Nunnery (志蓮淨苑) in Diamond Hill, founded in 1934, was rebuilt from 1994 as a Tang-style timber complex of more than 20 buildings, opened in 2000. Its main hall is modelled on the Tang-dynasty East Main Hall of Foguang Temple on Mount Wutai. South of it, the 3.5-hectare Tang-style Nan Lian Garden (南蓮園池) opened in 2006 with timber pavilions, rocks and old trees.
