Setting and landscape

The district covers 3,040 square kilometres. The Shuicheng district government gives an annual mean temperature of 15°C and a summer mean of 19.7°C, with forest over 63.55% of the land.

What to see

Yeyuhai (野玉海) became a national tourism resort in December 2020. It combines the Haiping Yi cultural town (海坪彝族文化小镇) in the south of the district, laid out in six clusters after the Yi story of the "six ancestors" (六祖分支), with the Yejiping plateau sports base (野鸡坪) at about 2,300 metres, which looks over the Beipan River (北盘江). On the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, the Yi Torch Festival fills Haiping's torch square with dancing around bonfires. Yushe National Forest Park (玉舍国家森林公园), on a spur of the Wumeng Mountains (乌蒙山) at the head of the Pearl River system, has an old tea-horse post road and a ski area that the district government describes as the lowest-latitude alpine ski resort in China.

Tianmen (天门) village in Huajia (花戛) is a Buyei (布依族) village with more than 600 years of history and 135 wood-and-tile stilt houses; it joined the national list of traditional villages in 2014. At Houerguan (猴儿关) in Doujing (陡箐), house walls are covered with Shuicheng peasant paintings (水城农民画), a folk style the district government says is hailed as the "Oriental Picasso". The Baichehe (百车河) 4A area, spanning Panlong (蟠龙) and Agai (阿戛) towns, is built around hot springs and waterwheels, and the Beipan River crossing of the Red Army's Ninth Corps has an exhibition hall.

Food and local products

Shuicheng laoguo (水城烙锅), which the Liupanshui city government dates back over 300 years to the Qing dynasty, is cooked at the table on a black-sand griddle with a raised centre. Stinky tofu goes around the rim, potato slices in the middle ring and meat on the hump; as the meat cooks, its excess fat runs down to the edge. Everything is eaten as it cooks, dipped in a spicy sauce.

Getting oriented

The Shuicheng district government puts its urban area 8 kilometres from Liupanshui Yuezhao Airport (月照机场) and 5 kilometres from Liupanshui East high-speed rail station, with the Anshun–Liupanshui high-speed railway and the Guiyang–Kunming railway crossing the district from east to west.
