Setting and landscape

Across the river lie the Russian towns of Shimanovsk and Svobodny and the Magdagachi district. On the Chinese side, Huma meets Xinlin District (新林区) and Tahe County (塔河县) to the west and north, and Heihe's Aihui District (爱辉区) and Nenjiang (嫩江) to the south. The county town, Huma town (呼玛镇), is described as the only county-level town on the upper Amur that sits right on the riverbank; it was approved as a first-class port for passengers and freight in 1992.

Winters are long and severe. Chinese Wikipedia gives a January mean of −26.2°C and a July mean of 20.6°C. The county government counts more than a thousand kinds of wild plants, among them berries, wild greens, edible fungi and medicinal herbs, and it names ice and snow, the border river, old battlefields, old post stations and minority customs as the draws for visitors.

History

The county government records that in the spring of 1684 the Qing had the Humar wooden fort (呼玛尔木城) built for military use on an island where the Huma River (呼玛河) meets the Amur. In 1691 the Oroqen (鄂伦春) of the Humar River basin were organised as the Kumar route (库玛尔路) under the Butha administration (布特哈总管衙门). According to the same history, in 1909, because gold workings were booming, the provincial council set up an administrative bureau at the mouth of the Kumar, a spot also known as Jinshankou (金山口). The bureau became Huma County in 1914, and that October the county office moved to Guzhan (古站), today's Huma town. Baiyinna (白银纳) is an Oroqen ethnic township.
