Setting and history
The district lies where the Gan-Fu plain rises towards the Wuyi Mountains: hills ring a central alluvial basin, and most of the ground is 30 to 80 metres above sea level. Furong Mountain (芙蓉山) in the south is the highest point at 1,176 metres. The Fu River crosses the district from south-east to north-west.
Linru County (临汝县) was carved out of the north-west of Nancheng County in AD 96 and named after the Lin and Ru rivers that flow through it. In 589, under the Sui, the county became Linchuan and the commandery became Fuzhou. The present district dates from 2000, when Fuzhou became a prefecture-level city.
What to see
Wenchangli takes its name from the Wenchang pavilion at the head of its street; People's Daily describes it as a former busy trading port that keeps Ming and Qing lanes. The Wenchangli–Tangjiashan (汤家山) historic district, on Jiangxi's second list of provincial historic districts, is bounded by the Fu River on the west and south and contains the Yulong Wanshou Palace (玉隆万寿宫), a national key protected site.
Tang Xianzu's tomb is on Lingzhi Hill (灵芝山), south of the east end of Wenchang Bridge (文昌桥). It was badly damaged during the Cultural Revolution; in 2016, during restoration of Wenchangli, 42 tombs of six generations of his family were found beneath a former ice factory. A memorial cenotaph in the People's Park dates from 1982, and the Tang Xianzu Memorial Hall (汤显祖纪念馆) opened in 1995. Linru Academy (临汝书院) is described by People's Daily as Jiangxi's largest group of Song-style academy buildings.
Food
People's Daily names three local dishes. Linchuan soaked rice noodles (临川泡粉) are served in a milky broth of long-simmered leg bones with spring onion and chopped chilli. Linchuan beef offal (临川牛杂) combines tripe, intestine, liver and heart, stir-fried over high heat, then stewed and steamed. Linchuan pickled stems (临川菜梗) are mustard-green stems cured with chilli and garlic.
