What to see
The Yalu River Broken Bridge (鸭绿江断桥) was the first railway bridge across the Yalu, built between 1909 and 1911 with a swing span that could turn open. The United States bombed it on 8 November 1950 to cut the supply line of the Chinese People's Volunteers, and four spans still stand ending in a clean break.
The Memorial of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (抗美援朝纪念馆), first set up in 1958, is described by the district government as the only memorial hall in China devoted to the whole history of that war and of the campaign at home that supported it. It reopened in a rebuilt form in September 2020 and holds more than 20,000 objects in a memorial tower, exhibition hall, panorama hall and defence-education park.
Andong Old Street (安东老街), built in 2010 a minute from the Yalu River scenic area, recreates the old Andong, as Dandong was once called, with Republican-era style buildings, old shop names and Manchu, Korean and Hui food.
History
At 73 Jiuwei Road (九纬路) stands a two-storey house built in the 1930s as a residence for officials of Andong province (安东省) under Manchukuo. Zhang Wentian (张闻天) lived and worked there from May 1949 to February 1950, while he was Communist Party secretary of Liaodong province (辽东省); he left to become China's chief envoy to the United Nations. Dandong listed the house as a municipal protected site in June 2020, and restoration began in 2024; inside, the guard room, reception room and office have been recreated.
