About Jiumenkou
Stone paving across the riverbed and the controlled openings below the wall distinguish this section from a conventional ridge-top visit. The adjoining wall and towers climb into the hills on the Liaoning–Hebei border. Begin with the crossing's overall structure before choosing a permitted hill section; the scenic visit does not imply access to every unrestored wall nearby.
The river at Jiumenkou is seasonal, running low or drying up completely outside the flood season, and a wall was built across the crossing to stop enemy forces from entering along the dry riverbed. Nine arched gates, each fitted with double-layered wooden doors, were kept closed during low water and opened to let floodwater pass during the wet season.
The crossing is 110 metres long, 23 metres wide and 10 metres high. The riverbed beneath the bridge is paved entirely with closely fitted squared stones, so that the bridge appears to stand on a single unbroken slab, giving the site its alternate name, Yipianshi Guan (一片石关). It has been a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) since 1996, in the fourth such national listing.
What to look for
