About She County, Anhui
Xu Guo’s stone memorial arch anchors the old centre, while Doushan Street leads past high-walled residences, carved entrances and old wells. Beyond the central lanes, Yuliang Dam records the river engineering that supported trade. Choose a compact old-town visit first, then add Yuliang as a separate extension if time and transport allow.
She County was established under the Qin dynasty's county system in 221 BCE and later belonged in turn to the Kuaiji, Danyang and Xin'an commanderies. After the Sui dynasty conquered Chen, Shezhou prefecture was created with its seat at She County; in the Northern Song, following the suppression of the Fang La rebellion, Emperor Huizong renamed Shezhou to Huizhou, which the Yuan, Ming and Qing continued as an administrative seat. In 1988 the former Huizhou Prefecture was abolished and reorganized as Huangshan City, and the county's western part was separated to form Huizhou District.
The county seat, Huicheng town (徽城镇), was the former Huizhou prefectural city, split by two hills into an eastern half -the old She County suburb city, ringed by hills in a crescent shape- and a western half, the former prefectural city, facing the Lian River (练江) on open ground. Ming-dynasty walls survive only as a few gate towers and wall sections. Villages beyond the seat, such as Yuliang (渔梁) and Tangyue (棠樾), retain historic streets, and local residences, ancestral halls and memorial arches are together known as the 'Three Wonders of Huizhou Architecture' (徽州建筑三绝).
