About Turpan
Jiaohe lies west of the modern city, while Gaochang, Astana and the Flaming Mountains form a different eastern group. Museum collections connect these dispersed sites with documents, textiles and objects from everyday life. The irrigated oasis and grape cultivation help explain how settlement persisted in the dry basin; group visits by direction rather than crossing the region repeatedly.
The name originally referred to a particular city, one of three ancient settlements within today's Gaochang District (高昌区). It appears in a Brahmi document dated 925, while a Chinese rendering occurs in an imperial decree of 1276. Over time, the name also came to describe the surrounding region and basin.
Manuscripts dating from the fifth to eighth centuries show the use of Tocharian A for administrative and religious writing in the region. Tocharian languages continued to be spoken here until at least the eighth century. A document dated 273 provides the earliest surviving evidence of Chinese characters at Turpan, reflecting another strand of the area's written record.

Background & history
Turpan (Uyghur: تۇرپان) or Turfan (Chinese: 吐鲁番) is a prefecture-level city located in the east of the autonomous region of Xinjiang, China. The historical center of the prefectural area has shifted a number of times, from Yar-Khoto (Jiaohe, 10 km or 6.2 mi to the west of modern Turpan) to Qocho (Gaochang, 30 km or 19 mi to the southeast of Turpan) and to Turpan itself.
