About Cicheng ancient town
The Confucian Temple makes education and ritual visible in a formal compound, while traditional residences such as the Fuzi Mentou and Jiadi Shijia give the surrounding lanes a domestic scale. Compare those settings before adding other managed heritage venues. The old town contains buildings from different periods and restoration campaigns, so a historic foundation date should not be read as the age of every present façade.
The walled city dates from the eighth century and had a tradition of handicraft production. Its name refers to its former role as the county seat of Cixi (慈溪). It was designated a Chinese Historical and Cultural Town (中国历史文化名镇) on 16 September 2005. By 2012, efforts to revive the town's traditions included demonstrations by skilled craftspeople at a cultural park. Traditional artisans were also being encouraged to settle in the town and establish workshops, linking the restoration programme with the continued practice of local crafts.
