About Baoguo Temple

Its main hall retains a Northern Song core dated to 1013, enclosed by later alterations and expanded eaves. Fluted, assembled columns, bracket sets and the octagonal ceiling structure make the building’s engineering visible. Compare these details with the later halls and Jingtu Pool rather than assigning one date to the entire compound. The architecture and its successive changes are the main focus of the visit.

The surviving principal buildings occupy three terraces along an axis facing southeast. White walls separate the formal central spaces from former living quarters, guest rooms and storage areas on either side. In 1684, added columns and lower eaves enlarged the main hall; terrain constraints meant the rear retained a different roof arrangement from the other three sides.

By 2017, religious activity had ceased and the site functioned as an ancient-architecture museum and a teaching and research base. The Heavenly Kings Hall (天王殿) introduces the temple's history, environment and models, while the main hall explains structural features. The temple became a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 1961.

What to look for

  • The main hall’s Song timber core features assembled columns and elaborate bracket sets.
  • The octagonal ceiling structure and later outer eaves reveal different layers of construction.
