About Tianyi Ge
The two-storey library faces a pond intended to help protect the books from fire, giving the water both practical and symbolic importance. Rockeries, bridges and planting soften the carefully controlled book-storage setting. The Qin family’s drama stage adds a contrasting space for public performance. Follow the relationship between books, water and domestic architecture; the preserved collection does not imply unrestricted access to the library’s original upper rooms.
The library was built in 1561. After its founder's death in 1585, his eldest son, Fan Dachong (范大冲), inherited more than 70,000 volumes while relinquishing the family's other property. Rules made the books the shared possession of descendants and required the different family branches to assemble their keys before cupboards could be unlocked.
In 1773, the family submitted 641 rare titles for an imperial compilation; the books were not returned. The court also studied the library's building arrangement and ordered four imperial libraries to follow its model. Tianyi Ge became a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 1982.
