About Xi'an Incident Memorial Museum · Zhang Xueliang Residence

Three parallel, three-storey buildings preserve the layout of a 1930s compound that became a center of negotiations during the December 1936 crisis. The western building housed Zhang’s family, while the eastern building accommodated the Communist delegation. Seeing those spaces together makes the political story more concrete than a chronology alone.

Zhang Xueliang (张学良) rented the newly completed compound in September 1935. After its purchase in 1954, the property became a guesthouse for officials of the Shaanxi provincial Party committee (陕西省委). It was transferred to the provincial cultural relics authority in 1984, repaired in 1986 and opened to the public in December that year. Further repairs to the residence took place in 1991-1992.

In 1982, the residence was included with seven other buildings under the designation Xi'an Incident Sites (西安事变旧址), a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位). The memorial's preparation office assembled more than 300 related objects between 1983 and 1986 through transfers, collection, donation and reproduction. In 1986, the family of Zhang's former Western-style cook, Gu Lianrong (谷连荣), donated fourteen objects.
