About Xi'an Xianyang Airport
Terminals 2, 3 and 5 serve different flights, making the terminal on the current booking the first detail to verify. Terminal 5 has its own ground-transport connection, while the older terminals use the airport’s western metro station. For an arrival or transfer, the useful sequence is to identify the terminal, complete baggage and border formalities as applicable, then choose the correct metro, road transport or inter-terminal connection.
The airport originated in a small military airfield built on the Dizhang plateau (底张塬) in 1937. The old Xi'an Xiguan Airport (西关机场) had become too close to the growing city and too noisy, so in the early 1980s, after Shaanxi officials appealed to Deng Xiaoping (邓小平), the State Council and Central Military Commission approved expanding the Xianyang airfield for civilian use instead. Construction began in 1987, the first phase opened on 1 September 1991, the airport was renamed Xi'an Xianyang International Airport in 1995, and it was transferred to the Shaanxi provincial government in 2003.
The airport lies in Weicheng District of Xianyang, within the Xixian New Area, 25 kilometres northwest of central Xi'an. It is the only international airport in the Guanzhong city cluster, rated at the highest flight-area grade of 4F with Category II instrument landing capability. It has three operating runways and four separately run terminals, T1, T2, T3 and T5, together exceeding 1.1 million square metres of terminal floor area.
It functions as a major gateway for mainland China and the largest air-transport hub in the northwest, ranking fifth among mainland airports by area. In 2024 it handled 47.039 million passengers, the 11th-highest total nationwide, and was rated a four-star airport by Skytrax. It serves as a main base for China Eastern Airlines' northwest operations.
