Setting and history
Most of the district is land that the sea has given up. It stretches 79 kilometres east to west and 43 kilometres north to south, with 214 kilometres of coast, and borders Lijin County (利津县) to the south and Kenli (垦利) to the south-east. The district government dates the first settlers to 1830, the 10th year of the Qing Daoguang reign; under the Guangxu reign the area was split between Zhanhua (沾化) and Lijin counties. Hekou District was created in November 1982 with the new city of Dongying, and its government was formed in 1984. Chinese Wikipedia describes it as one of the main oil-producing areas of the Shengli Oilfield (胜利油田).
What to see
The Gudao Black Locust Forest Hot Spring Tourism Area (孤岛槐树林温泉旅游区) in Gudao (孤岛) has been a national 4A scenic area since 25 December 2019. At its core is the Gudao forest of black locust trees (刺槐), planted from 1960 and described by Dazhong Daily as the most complete surviving plain forest of planted black locust. The Shenxian Gully (神仙沟), once a course of the Yellow River, winds through the trees, and the area also has an agricultural exposition park and geothermal resources. Facilities include a forest culture hall, a memorial pavilion and a plank walkway. The area hosts the Yellow River Delta Wetland Black Locust Blossom Festival (黄河三角洲湿地槐花节), which had been held eight times by 2020, along with national photography exhibitions.
