Mountains and seasonal rivers

Jiaokou’s western mountains include Gaomiaoshan (高庙山) and Qipanshan (棋盘山). Jiaokou County Government identifies Huangyundong (黄云洞), at 2,054 metres where Jiaokou, Shilou (石楼) and Zhongyang (中阳) meet, as the county’s highest point. Limestone is exposed in southeastern gullies. Its principal rivers, including the Baoyan (宝岩河), Shikou (石口河) and Wenquan (温泉河), are seasonal.

A young county with older sites

Jiaokou was formed in 1971 from outlying townships of Xiaoyi (孝义), Lingshi (灵石) and Xixian (隰县). Its named cultural sites include the Yuan dynasty Qianfo Temple (千佛寺), Xizhuang Village (西庄) and the former headquarters of the Red Army’s eastern expedition (红军东征总指挥部旧址). Seabuckthorn (沙棘), Fenzhou walnuts (汾州核桃) and small-grain crops are among the area’s agricultural products.
