A small temple by the river
Shilong Temple stands in Yonghe Village (永和村), on the south bank of the Zhangping River (樟平溪), a tributary of the Maoluo River (貓羅溪). The small shrine is dedicated to Tudigong (土地公), the protective earth deity. Its name refers to its stone deity figure and to the hills behind it, likened to a dragon’s back.
Noodles and indigo
Pilgrims at Shilong Temple traditionally offer instant noodles, a practice different from the offerings at many larger temples. Zhongliao also has a dyeing workshop, Xiulian Dyeing and Weaving (繡蓮染織工坊). Plant material is processed into indigo, then used for tying, dipping and fixing patterns in cloth.
Getting oriented
Longfeng Waterfall (龍鳳瀑布) and Yongping Old Street (永平老街) are other named places within the township, alongside its village temples and agricultural communities.
