About Wanghailou Church
Its history includes repeated destruction and rebuilding during the violence of 1870, the Boxer period and later earthquake damage. The present church therefore embodies restoration as well as nineteenth-century Catholic history. Pointed arches, a towered façade and a long basilica-like interior distinguish it from Xikai Cathedral elsewhere in the city. A riverfront exterior visit can be combined with the bridge; interior access depends on the church's own arrangements.
