About Tianhou Temple (Tianjin)

Its origins in the Yuan period reflect Tianjin's long relationship with sailors, navigation and river trade. Unlike the surrounding modern shopping precinct, the temple preserves an older ceremonial layout facing toward the Haihe. The approach leads through gates and courts to a raised main hall, with an opera tower connecting worship and performance. Comparing the shrine with the craft shops outside helps explain how maritime belief became part of the city's broader folk culture.

The temple was founded in 1326, rebuilt in 1403, and took its present name in 1684. It is counted, with the Mazu Ancestral Temple (湄洲妈祖祖庙) on Meizhou Island and Beigang Chaotian Temple (北港朝天宫) in Taiwan, as one of the 'three great Mazu temples' in the world. It originally served boatmen sacrificing to the sea goddess Tianfei, and the streets beside it grew into a commercial market, with an annual Tianjin Imperial Fair (皇会) held on the goddess's birthday.

During the Cultural Revolution the temple was ransacked and its front hall, memorial archway and opera tower demolished; the 1976 Tangshan earthquake caused further damage. From 1985 the municipal government relocated residents, repaired the relics and restored the statues, reopening the complex as the Tianjin Folk Museum (天津民俗博物馆) on New Year's Day 1986.

The complex covers 5,280 square meters, with a built area of 1,341 square meters, and faces east toward the Haihe. Its buildings include a mountain gate, memorial archway, front hall, sutra-storage pavilion, Qisheng shrine, bell-and-drum tower and side halls. Two flagpoles, 25 and 26 meters tall, stand before the mountain gate, and the main hall's Niangniang statue is 2.7 meters tall.
