Two levels of plateau
Much of the county stands above 4,500 metres. The county government distinguishes a lower surface at roughly 4,500–5,000 metres and a higher one at 5,200–5,500 metres. On the higher surface, broad-topped hills alternate with wide lake-basin valleys. The terrain slopes generally from northwest to southeast.
A tree drawn by running water
Near kilometre marker 2860 on National Highway 216 (216国道), on the southern shore of Dong Co (洞错) at Quedeng Village (确登村), erosion has made a branching pattern called the Earth Tree (大地之树). Water-scoured channels form its trunk and branches. In the county’s northern uninhabited country, wildlife includes Tibetan antelope, wild yaks, wild asses, snowcocks and argali, amid alpine desert grassland.
