Three lakes and the salt trade

In Yanhu Township (盐湖乡), Luma Renbo Co (鲁玛仁布错), Jiga Co (吉嘎错) and Kaqing Co (卡庆错) are collectively called the Zhangcang Three Lakes (章仓三湖). Salt from these lakes was carried on livestock to Purang (普兰), Shigatse (日喀则), India and Nepal, in exchange for highland barley, brick tea and cloth. The salt-processing factory established in 2005 subsequently developed activities from extraction and storage to packaging and sales.

Handwoven everyday objects

Yanhu’s weaving factory draws on local traditional techniques. A 2018 account published by the Xizang (西藏) tourism department describes Tibetan headscarves, blankets, seating mats and handbags made entirely by hand. Across the county, numerous rivers and more than thirty lakes lie within a cold plateau landscape averaging above 4,700 metres.
