Sculptural trunks in the desert
Yiwu Poplar Forest Ecological Park (伊吾胡杨林生态园景区) lies about ten kilometres east of Naomaohu. Hami’s municipal government describes the trees’ irregular forms as resembling root carvings and bonsai. The named areas include Wangong Mountain (弯弓山), Sunrise on the Eastern Hill (日出东山) and the Poplar Elder (胡杨老人).
Apricots and dried curds
Weizixia’s wild apricots can be eaten as fruit or processed into preserves and dried apricots; the kernels yield oil. Another local food is suannai geda (酸奶疙瘩), dried sour-milk curds. Cow’s or sheep’s milk is boiled, cooled and fermented with yoghurt. Churning separates butter; after it is removed, the sour milk is heated to thicken, drained in a cloth bag, broken into pieces and sun-dried.
