Setting and landscape
Of the district's 340 square kilometres, 70 are the waters of Lake Chao, and the Nanfei River (南淝河) crosses it.
History
The area was first organised in January 1951 as Hefei's suburban district, carved from eight townships of Feidong (肥东) and Feixi (肥西) counties. In March 2002 the suburban district was renamed Baohe and took over three street offices of the former Xishi District (西市区), including Wuhu Road (芜湖路).
What to see
Lord Bao Park (包公园), a 4A scenic area at 72 Wuhu Road, commemorates Bao Zheng (包拯). Its Lord Bao Shrine (包公祠), a provincial protected site since 1961, has the longest continuous history of all his shrines in China; the main hall holds his statue, figures of four guards and three bronze guillotines with dragon, tiger and dog heads. A well in the Lianquan Pavilion (廉泉亭) is the subject of a legend that its water gave a corrupt prefect a headache. The park also contains Bao's tomb and the Qingfeng Pavilion (清风阁).
On the north shore of Lake Chao, the Memorial Museum of the Yangtze River Crossing Campaign (渡江战役纪念馆) opened on 28 November 2012 to mark the 1949 campaign. Its main hall, shaped like two warships, rises from the ground at 49 degrees in reference to 1949; the Victory Tower is 99 metres high and star-shaped when seen from above, and a bronze group shows the five members of the campaign's General Front Committee. The Anhui Celebrities Museum (安徽名人馆), opened in 2015, is run with it. Other sights in the district include Binhu Wetland Forest Park (滨湖湿地森林公园).
Getting oriented
Hefei South railway station (合肥南站) lies in the district, and the old Luogang Airport (骆岗机场), now closed, is also here. The district holds the east and south campuses of the University of Science and Technology of China (中国科学技术大学) and the Tunxi Road campus of Hefei University of Technology (合肥工业大学).
