Setting and landscape

The east and north are low hills and ridges, while the centre and south open into rolling plain and lakeside flats. The highest point is Mount Fucha (浮槎山) at 418.1 metres. The Jianghuai watershed (江淮分水岭) crosses the central north of the county from west to east, so part of Feidong drains to the Huai and part to the Yangtze. The Nanfei River (南淝河) enters Lake Chao at Changlinhe (长临河镇), which also holds the Shibalianwei wetland (十八联圩生态湿地); the third phase of the wetland restoration was chosen in 2024 as a case for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

What to see

Changlinhe, nicknamed "the little Shanghai north of the Yangtze", has 19 kilometres of lakeshore and is on Anhui's list of thousand-year-old towns, a list that requires more than a thousand years of settlement. The town has blue-brick, horse-head-gabled houses with carved wooden doors and windows, and its old street is a national 4A scenic area. In the town are a century-old post office, a photo studio of more than 70 years, a barber's of over 50 years and an oil mill of over 40 years that still shows traditional pressing. In the same town, the Liujiafan (六家畈) old dwellings, home mostly to the Wu family, produced Huai Army (淮军) commanders and keep finely carved Huizhou-style brick and woodwork; Siding Mountain (四顶山) forest park is named for its four peaks side by side.

Bao Zheng (包拯), the Northern Song official, was born in Xiaobao village (小包村) in Baogong town (包公镇). The Baogong Hometown Cultural Park (包公故里文化园) there groups his former residence, the Xiaosu Pavilion (孝肃阁), an academy and a grove. At Yaogang (瑶岗), a memorial hall occupies the former headquarters of the General Front Committee for the Yangtze River Crossing Campaign (渡江战役总前委).

Getting oriented

The county seat is Dianbu (店埠镇). The Huainan railway and the Hefei–Nanjing high-speed line cross the county from west to east, and high-speed trains stop at Feidong station. Changlinhe, 15 kilometres in a straight line from urban Hefei, has its own station on the Hefei–Fuzhou high-speed railway, one of three on that line within Hefei.
