The county gazetteer office traces the name Gongxian to 1371, when Gongzhou (珙州) was reduced from a prefecture to a county during the Ming dynasty. The county’s historic remains include Bo hanging coffins (僰人悬棺) and the Wuchi Road (五尺道). Gongxian County Government also records surviving dove trees (珙桐) within the county.
