Setting and landscape
The district stretches about 85 kilometres north to south and 55 kilometres east to west. Its north is typical limestone mountain country, the centre is low and middle mountains, and the south is mostly plain. The highest peak, Pingkengding (平坑顶, 1,181 metres), rises between Longjing (龙颈镇) and Jintan (浸潭镇) towns. The Bin River (滨江), a tributary of the Bei, lies wholly inside the district: it rises on Dawu Mountain (大雾山) in Shitan town (石潭镇) in the northwest and runs about 77 kilometres southeast past Jintan, Heyun (禾云), Longjing and Taihe (太和) before meeting the Bei at Feishuikou (飞水口). About 80% of the yearly rain falls between April and September.
History
Qingxin was split from the old Qingyuan County in January 1988 as Qingjiao District (清郊区). In 1992 it became Qingxin County, with its government at Taihe town, and on 15 November 2012 the State Council approved turning the county into Qingxin District of Qingyuan.
What to see
The district builds its tourism on hot springs and rafting, and its titles include China's 'home of hot springs', 'home of rafting', 'home of dragon boats' and 'home of remarkable caves'. By the end of 2024 it had 23 open scenic areas, three of them rated national 4A. Southern Daily reports that Gulong Gorge (古龙峡), Xuanzhen (玄真) and Bijia Mountain (笔架山), all in Taihe town, run rafting. Gulong Gorge is a national sports-tourism demonstration base, and the Xuanzhen Ancient Cave (玄真古洞) resort is a provincial forest-wellness base. Taihe's protected sites include the Aotou Pagoda (鳌头塔) and Taihe Ancient Cave (太和古洞). Reserves and parks include the provincial Baiwan (白湾) nature reserve and forest parks at Taihe Cave and Bijia Mountain.
Food and local products
Three local products carry national geographical-indication protection: Qingyuan black-maned goose (清远乌鬃鹅), Qingxin rock-sugar mandarins (清新冰糖桔) and Qingxin mandarin fish (清新桂花鱼). Traditional products also include Qingyuan chicken, simiao rice (丝苗米), mazhu bamboo shoots (麻竹笋) and Pukeng tea (蒲坑茶). The district also names Bijia tea (笔架茶), whose making is listed as intangible heritage in Taihe, and 'mountain-water tofu' (山水豆腐).
