Fusui County 扶绥县

Getting oriented

By expressway the county is 45 km from central Nanning, 28 km from Nanning Wuxu International Airport (南宁吴圩国际机场) and 67 km from urban Chongzuo. The Hunan–Guangxi railway (湘桂铁路) and the Nanning–Chongzuo high-speed railway cross it. The Ming geographer Xu Xiake (徐霞客) travelled the Zuo River here, visiting Bijia Mountain (笔架山) and Jinji Rock (金鸡岩), and judged the stone hills the finest and the stone banks the most remarkable.

History and heritage

Cliffs along the Zuo River carry rock paintings left by the Luoyue (骆越), ancestors of the Zhuang. In July 2016 the paintings, with their mountains, river and terraces, were inscribed on the World Heritage List as the Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape (左江花山岩画文化景观).

Dinosaur fossils about 130 million years old were first excavated in Fusui in 1973 and are kept at the National Natural History Museum. In 2001 a sauropod fossil 30 m long and 15 m high was dug up, and in 2014 the Ministry of Land and Resources named Fusui among the first national key protected fossil sites.

What to see

Longguwan (龙谷湾), 3 km from the county town, is a 4A dinosaur theme park opened on New Year's Day 2017. The Jiuchong Mountain (九重山) section of the Chongzuo white-headed langur reserve has its core in Nonglin village (弄廪村), Bapen township (岜盆乡). The langur, a first-class protected species found only in China, is black with an upright tuft of white hair on the head, and was described as a new species by the zoologist Tan Bangjie (谭邦杰) in 1957; the county government counts about 733 animals in 90 groups within Fusui.

At Guliao (姑辽) in Dongmen town (东门镇), on a spur of the Shiwan Mountains (十万大山) at an average altitude of 650 m, the Guliao tea area holds more than 5,100 wild tea trees, seven of them over a thousand years old.

Food and local products

Fusui sour congee (扶绥酸粥), listed as autonomous-region intangible heritage in 2015, is cooked rice or congee fermented for 10 to 15 days in an oil-free ceramic jar with a starter. It is not eaten straight from the jar but stir-fried with chilli and garlic and served as a dip for raw fish, white-cut duck and pork tripe. Quli roast pig (渠黎烤猪) is a three- to four-month-old suckling pig rubbed with sand ginger and salt and roasted whole over charcoal for two hours. Dongmen free-range chicken (东门土鸡) must be hatched and raised locally and free-range, preferably in orchards.
