Setting and landscape

The county covers 17,344 square kilometres and has 135 kilometres of border. The county government counts 123 rivers and streams and a forest cover of 70.44 per cent, and lists Xunke among the first 15 national sites for viewing weather and climate landscapes. Its own seasonal summary is azaleas in spring, river rafting in summer, multicoloured hillsides in autumn and rime in winter.

History

The name joins two towns, Xunhe (逊河) and Qike (奇克). Administration in the Xunhe area began in 1906, when the Qing set up an office in what is now Dongxin village of Xunhe town to manage the military and hunting affairs of the Oroqen (鄂伦春). A Xunhe county government was formed on 1 July 1932. Japanese forces occupied Xunhe and Qike counties in March 1933, and in July 1943 Manchukuo merged them as Xunke County. When the Northeast Democratic United Army arrived on 16 June 1946, the county seat moved from Xunhe to Qike town.

The county government counts 23 minority peoples, among them Oroqen, Daur (达斡尔) and Russians, and two of its townships, Xin'e (新鄂) and Xinxing (新兴), are Oroqen ethnic townships.

What to see

The Dapingtai rime (大平台雾凇) forms in the Kurbin River basin. The county government says it is known for lasting long, covering a large area and looking unusual, and that Chinese photographers call Xunke the "capital of rime in the northern land". The Xunke port is a national first-class port.

Local products

Red agate (红玛瑙) is plentiful in the county, which is known as the home of red agate. The county is also one of China's 100 commodity-grain base counties.
