Tsuen Wan District (荃灣) lies in the south-west of the New Territories and also takes in Ma Wan (馬灣) and the north-eastern corner of Lantau Island (大嶼山). It grew from an industrial centre into the first New Territories new town, developed by the government in the 1960s.

Setting and landscape

Behind the town, Shing Mun Reservoir (城門水塘) fills a valley that once held ten villages growing mainly pineapples; its dam is called Po Lo Pa (菠蘿壩), literally "pineapple dam", and the valley also has a disused lead mine where some Tsuen Wan residents once worked. Tai Mo Shan (大帽山) rises beyond. The Tsuen Wan District Council lists Tai Mo Shan Country Park and Shing Mun Country Park among the district's favourite scenic spots, together with the Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail (元荃古道), and notes the beaches around Ting Kau (汀九).

What to see

Sam Tung Uk Museum (三棟屋博物館) is a cultural and agricultural museum set up in a former Hakka walled village, and The Mills (南豐紗廠) is another historic building the district council describes as preserved. Around Lo Wai (老圍), the Yuen Yuen Institute (圓玄學院), the Western Monastery (西方寺) and Chuk Lam Sim Yuen (竹林禪院) form a cluster of temples. Hong Kong Disneyland lies inside the district boundary on Lantau, partly extending into Islands District. The town centre is known for its extensive footbridge network.

Food

The district council singles out three places to eat: restaurants at Sham Tseng (深井), countryside teahouses at Chuen Lung (川龍), and local diners in the town centre.

Getting oriented

Tsuen Wan links the western New Territories and Lantau with the urban area and is described by the district council as the gateway to the airport. Tsuen Wan station is the terminus of the MTR Tsuen Wan line, the Tuen Ma line stops at Tsuen Wan West on the waterfront, and the Disneyland Resort line runs within the district's Lantau section through Sunny Bay. The district was created in 1982 and originally included Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi, which were split off in the mid-1980s to form Kwai Tsing District.
