History

People lived along the Du River (堵河) here from about 5000 BCE. The area passed from the state of Chu to Qin, was organised as Weiyang County (微阳县) under the Jin and as Duyang County (堵阳县) under the Sui and early Tang, and later lay within Yun County (郧县). The district is named after Zhangwan village (张湾村). Chinese Wikipedia dates the district to 1973; English Wikipedia records a county-level subdistrict created in 1980 and turned into a district in May 1984.

What to see

Huanglong (黄龙镇), a town in the district on the Du River at the foot of the Qinling-Daba mountains, has an old quarter, Huanglong Old Town (黄龙古镇). When goods moved by river, the Du was a "golden waterway" that made the town widely known as "Little Hankou" (小汉口); the Xiangyang-Chongqing railway and National Highway 316 now pass through it.

The Bailongtan scenic area (百龙潭) lies in Taozi village (桃子村) in Huaguo (花果街道). The Changhewan scenic area (长河湾) has the Tuofeng waterfall (驼峰瀑布) and boat trips on its lake. In February 2021 the district's culture and tourism bureau announced that Changhewan and the Huanglong No. 1 eco-park (黄龙壹号生态园) had been rated national 3A scenic areas.

Climate and orientation

English Wikipedia describes a subtropical climate in which winters and summers are long, spring and autumn brief, and rainfall averages about 1,000 mm a year. Shiyan North railway station (十堰北站), on the Wuhan-Shiyan intercity line (汉十城际铁路), is in the district.
