History
The city's first name, Yandu (盐渎), dates from 119 BC and refers to sea-salt boiling and the canals dug to ship it; in 411 it was renamed Yancheng. When Yancheng County was split up in March 1983, the old Yancheng town became the city's urban district, and in 2004 that district was renamed Tinghu.
In March 1941, after the Southern Anhui Incident, the headquarters of the New Fourth Army (新四军) moved into the Taishan Temple (泰山庙), a Ming building on Jianjun West Road (建军西路), and the Central China Bureau of the Communist Party was set up there in May. The temple was restored to its original form in 1984 and in 2006 became a national protected monument.
What to see
Besides the New Fourth Army headquarters site, the district has three Jiangsu provincial monuments: the Qing-period house of Song Cao (宋曹宅) and the Lu Xiufu Shrine (陆秀夫祠), both on Ruxue Street (儒学街), and the former Fifth Branch of the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University (抗大五分校旧址) on the old Yancheng Middle School campus.
On the coast, Huangjian (黄尖镇) is the town of urban Yancheng nearest the sea and the seat of the World Heritage wetland and a provincial coastal-wetland resort. Its government points visitors to the rare-bird museum of the red-crowned crane reserve and to the story of Xu Xiujuan (徐秀娟), remembered as the red-crowned crane girl. It also promotes the Xinyanggang (新洋港) fishing port and its renovated old street, a Yellow Sea wetland bird-watching festival, and Baguatan (八卦滩), where visitors can try traditional methods of making salt from the sea.
Food and local products
Huangjian chrysanthemums (黄尖菊花) carry a national agricultural geographical-indication mark; the town staged a chrysanthemum culture and art festival in 2023 and also makes sea-salt and salt-carving souvenirs.
