About Lanzhou
Zhongshan Bridge connects the southern bank with the White Pagoda hillside, while traditional waterwheels recall irrigation along the river. The Gansu Provincial Museum adds the wider Silk Road context through pottery, Buddhist art and archaeological finds. These experiences work together as an introduction to Gansu before travelling farther along the Hexi Corridor.
The area was administered as Yuzhong county (榆中县) under the Qin dynasty; the Han dynasty general Huo Qubing (霍去病) campaigned west against the Xiongnu in 121 BC and established a garrison here, and Jincheng county (金城县) was created in 86 BC, later becoming the seat of Jincheng commandery. The name Lanzhou was adopted in 583, under the Sui dynasty, after Gaolan Mountain (皋兰山) south of the city. The city was held by the Tibetan Empire from 762; the surrounding Longyou region was recovered by the Tang general Zhang Yichao (张义潮) in 848 but soon fell to the Tangut. In 1666 Gansu became a separate province with its capital at Lanzhou.
The city lies at the meeting point of the Loess Plateau, the Tibetan Plateau and the Inner Mongolian Plateau, flanked on its north and south sides by spurs of the Qilian Mountains (祁连山). The Yellow River joins the Huangshui River (湟水) in the southwest of the municipal area and then flows east across the city, with Lanzhou set within a river-valley basin. The municipality covers 13,192 square kilometres, divided into five districts and three counties, with a resident population of 4.4251 million at the end of 2023. In August 2012, Lanzhou New Area (兰州新区) was approved as the first state-level new area in northwestern mainland China.
