About Daming Palace
The court governed from this palace for much of the Tang dynasty. A visit makes most sense when you follow its north–south axis and use the ruins to understand how the imperial compound was organised.
Danfeng Gate marks the southern ceremonial approach. Farther north, the Hanyuan, Xuanzheng and Zichen hall sites show the progression from major court ceremonies to the inner political centre. The scale is part of the experience: this is an extensive outdoor heritage park, so choose the archaeological core or a longer garden circuit according to your energy and interest.
What to look for
- The Danfeng Gate site and the southern approach, which establish the ceremonial axis of the palace.
- The Hanyuan Hall foundations and the sequence of former court halls farther north.
- Taiye Pond and the former palace-garden area, a different landscape from the formal court axis.
Location & getting there
Getting to Daming Palace
For the southern approach, search 大明宫国家遗址公园 丹凤门 on Ziqiang East Road (自强东路); the city's published address is 585 Ziqiang East Road. Select the gate before comparing a taxi or public-transport route, because the palace grounds extend well beyond the central map pin.
- Daminggong (大明宫) is a station on Metro Line 4. Check the route from the station to your chosen gate rather than assuming the station name means the closest entrance.
- Choose your exit from the park before booking onward transport; a northward garden walk finishes away from the southern ceremonial approach.
Combine your visit
For a history-focused city day, give Daming Palace the main visit and use the northern old city for a shorter second stop. This is an editorial combination, with transport between the park and the old-city stops.
-
Daming Palace大明宫
Follow the Tang palace axis from the southern gate toward the hall foundations; add Taiye Pond if you want a longer outdoor visit.
-
Revolution Park革命公园
Change from the imperial-scale archaeological landscape to a city park with memorial landscapes in the northern old city.
-
Muslim Quarter回民街
Finish with food streets and residential lanes around the historic mosques, after checking your onward route from the park.
This is a suggested sequence, not a timed walking route. Check venue access and actual transport connections before setting the day's schedule.
