What to see
The Qinghai Provincial Museum stands at 58 Xiguan Street (西关大街), on the east side of Xinning Square (新宁广场). Its present building opened on 1 May 2001 with nine exhibition halls; by 2013 the collection held more than 47,000 objects, over 150 of them graded national first-class relics. In 2017 the permanent displays were a history exhibition titled "Civilisation of the River Sources" and an exhibition of Qinghai's intangible heritage, and the Chinese Museums Association named it a national first-grade museum that year.
The Hutai (虎台), in Hutai subdistrict, is the earthen remnant of a review terrace. Records say Tufa Hutai (秃发虎台), crown prince of the Southern Liang (南凉) ruler Tufa Rutan (秃发傉檀), built it for inspecting troops; it originally rose in nine tiers, and local people call it the "general's platform" (点将台). It was a provincial heritage site from 1957 and became a national key heritage site in 2013. The Xining Museum (西宁市博物馆), at 74 Xiguan Street, stands within the Hutai site park.
In the Haihu New Area (海湖新区), the Qinghai provincial government reports that the Chengxi government turned a domed building of over 6,000 square metres, idle for more than ten years, into the "777ISLAND" street of hotpot restaurants, cafés, barbecue and craft-beer bars. It sits between the Qinghai Grand Theatre (青海大剧院) to the east, Haihu Wanda Plaza (海湖万达广场) to the south and the Qinghai Science and Technology Museum (青海省科技馆) to the west.
Getting oriented
Chengxi is divided into seven subdistricts, among them Xiguan Street (西关大街), Hutai and Wenhui Road (文汇路), and one town, Pengjiazhai (彭家寨镇). The district government sits on Wusi Avenue (五四大街).
