Layers of pottery history

At Huangbao, an exposed section of deposits runs chronologically from the Tang to the Yuan dynasties (唐至元代). Yaozhou ware developed into a major northern celadon tradition. The museum’s Tang–Song site hall (唐宋遗址保护厅) displays kilns and workshops, with reconstructed archaeological layers showing potsherds, kiln furniture, plant ash and coal slag. Illustrated sequences explain the stages of ceramic production.

The sancai workshops

Northeast of the museum, the Tang sancai site (唐三彩遗址) preserves a workshop group formed from seven cave chambers. Excavations revealed three firing kilns and a small test kiln, together with wheel-axis pits, forming moulds, clay and unfinished vessels. The museum courtyard also has pottery-experience rooms for wheel work, clay preparation and carved decoration.
