History
The district in its present form dates from 2013, when the former Shizhong District (市中区) and Rencheng District were merged. The district portal calls Jining the 'capital of canal transport' of the Yuan, Ming and Qing. The city lay at the summit of the canal, its 'water ridge', beyond which water flowed away naturally to both north and south; the high ground held water poorly, so the canal here could run dry and stop boats. From the Yuan to the Qing the court stationed senior officials in Jining to manage the waterway; in the early Qing the Director-General of the Yellow River and Grand Canal (河道总督) was based here, and more than twenty canal offices crowded the city, earning it the saying that 'yamens stand like a forest'.
What to see
The Tianjing Sluice site (天井闸遗址), also called Huiyuan Sluice (会源闸), marks a gate first built in 624 under the Tang, rebuilt in 1294 and remodelled in 1321 to regulate water from the Si (泗水) and Wen (汶水) rivers feeding the canal. Its remains and a Ming stone embankment on the canal's south bank came to light in 2006 during city river works.
The Dongda Mosque (济宁东大寺) stands on Shanghe West Street (上河西街) on the west bank of the old canal. Founded in the Hongwu reign of the Ming and enlarged in the Tianshun and Kangxi reigns, it was repaired by imperial order in 1770. It faces east, and its main prayer hall is 28 metres wide, over 40 metres deep and 30 metres high. It joined the national heritage list in 2006.
Inside the Jining Museum (济宁博物馆), on the former Tietasi Street, rises the Iron Pagoda of Chongjue Temple (崇觉寺铁塔). The temple was founded in 560; the iron pagoda was raised in 1105, and its last two storeys and gilded finial were added in 1581. It is octagonal, nine storeys and 23.8 metres high on a brick base, and has been a national heritage site since 1988. Taibai Tower (太白楼) entered the fourth batch of Shandong provincial heritage sites in 2013.
