Setting and landscape

Zhangdian sits on the northern edge of the eastern rim of the Zibo syncline basin, in the belt where low hills give way to the Yellow River flood plain. The ground is gentle, higher to the east and south. The Xiaofu (孝妇河), Zhulong (猪龙河), Laozi (涝淄河) and Mansi (漫泗河) rivers cross the district; all except the Zhulong flow northward through it from beyond its borders. The climate is warm-temperate and monsoonal, with four distinct seasons and concentrated rainfall.

History

The place was known in the past as Huangsangdian (黄桑店). In 284 BC King Zhao of Yan (燕昭王) made Yue Yi (乐毅) Lord of Changguo (昌国君) for his success against Qi, and after the Qin unification of 221 BC a Changguo County was set up at the Changguo town site; the Sui abolished it in 586. Zhangdian grew in the late Song and early Jin, and under the Yuan it was one of three towns of Zichuan County. The railway station was first built in 1903, and Zhangdian District was created in April 1955. Before 1949 the built-up town covered less than 3 square kilometres.

What to see

The Zibo Museum (淄博市博物馆), on Shangchang West Road (商场西路) on the north side of the city's central square, is a general museum of the region founded on 2 April 1958 and rated a national first-grade museum. Its best-known holdings are the bronzes, jades and gold and silver objects excavated from the Western Han tomb of the King of Qi (西汉齐王墓) and the Warring States cemetery at Shangwangcun (商王村).

Zibo Station (淄博站), in Chezhan subdistrict (车站街道), was first built in 1903 as Zhangdian Station and took its present name in 1987. Its south building, opened in 2022, has a facade styled on a palace of the state of Qi (齐国), and its halls carry murals on themes including cuju (蹴鞠), the ancient ball game, and the city's past as a trading port.

Among local crafts, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism named Zhang Guangqing (张广庆), a Lu-school inside painting (鲁派内画) practitioner, a national representative bearer of intangible heritage in 2025, and Zibo pyrography (淄博烫画) was put on the city's intangible heritage list.

Getting oriented

The district government puts Zhangdian 110 kilometres from Jinan, 70 kilometres from Jinan's international airport and 210 kilometres from Qingdao port. Zibo Station is a junction of the Jiaozhou–Jinan railway (胶济铁路), the Jiaozhou–Jinan passenger line and the Zidong (淄东铁路) and Zhangbo (张博铁路) railways.
