A fossil landscape

The basin has yielded mammals, reptiles, fish, invertebrates and plants. Its Cenozoic mammals form the Yushe Fauna (榆社动物群), placed between the Baode Fauna (保德动物群) and Nihewan Fauna (泥河湾动物群). Designated a national geopark in 2014, the park comprises Yunzhu Lake (云竹湖), Bazhanggou (巴掌沟) and Taoyang (桃阳) scenic areas, together with separate fossil localities.

Museum and religious heritage

Yushe County Museum (榆社县博物馆) holds cultural objects acquired through archaeological excavation, rescue collecting and collection from local people. Miaolingshan Thousand-Buddha Cave (庙岭山千佛洞) and Yanliang Fuxiang Temple (岩良福祥寺) stand around the fossil area. Stone carvings, religious images, temples and revolutionary sites are among the county’s documented cultural remains.
