A village of painted walls
The village lies five kilometres from the urban area. Its farm courtyards combine western Sichuan (四川) residential forms with the architecture of Jiangnan (江南) water towns, following reconstruction after the Wenchuan earthquake (汶川地震). Paintings decorate white walls beneath blue-grey tiled roofs, and workshops and an exhibition hall form part of the village.
Pictures and a family courtyard
Mianzhu pictures use bright colours, flowing lines and varied subjects. Their designs also appear on cushions, tablecloths and phone cases. Li Family Courtyard (李家大院), also called Mingqing Garden (明清园), was founded during the Qing dynasty’s Jiaqing reign by Li Fan (李藩) and further developed by his grandson Li Deyang (李德扬).
