Sugar and administrative buildings
Huwei Sugar Factory (虎尾糖廠), its railway station (虎尾驛) and iron bridge (虎尾鐵橋) record the former movement of cane and sugar. The old district office houses Yunlin Hand Puppet Museum (雲林布袋戲館), while the district governor’s residence became Yunlin Story House (雲林故事館). The Joint Office Building (虎尾合同廳舍), registration office (虎尾登記所) and old water tower (虎尾舊水塔) are other surviving landmarks.
Crops and visual culture
Local fields produce sugarcane, rice, peanuts, sweet potatoes, asparagus, garlic and maize. Gladioli and chrysanthemums are among its cultivated flowers. Beixi village (北溪里) has painted papercut art, and Dingxi’s (頂溪里) “Cats on the Roof” area (屋頂上的貓) features cat-themed imagery.
