From fields to wetland
Low-lying fields and prolonged groundwater extraction contributed to severe subsidence, while typhoons brought seawater inland. The abandoned fields became habitat for wetland plants and waterbirds. Chenglong covers about 50 hectares; its birds include black-faced spoonbills, mallards and short-eared owls. Environmental art projects have also left works responding to the wetland ecosystem.
Buildings shaped by birds
Kouhu Visitor Centre (口湖遊客中心) takes flying waterbirds as its architectural starting point. The roofs of its two buildings overlap like a pair of birds in flight, while their slopes extend the surrounding landscape. Screens at the ecological pond and birdwatching pavilion allow views through them while reducing disturbance to the birds being observed.
