White walls below six peaks

The monastery stands in Jue’en Township (觉恩乡) at roughly 4,800 metres, about thirty-seven kilometres from the county seat. White walls and golden roofs sit against six reddish peaks. Its religious heritage includes scriptures, ritual objects and murals. Masked dances form part of the Rooster Year ritual gathering, held once every twelve years.

Two glacier-fed lakes

Buto Tsochen (布托措青) and Buto Tsochung (布托措穷) lie roughly twenty-five kilometres north of the county seat, about five kilometres apart. They sit at approximately 4,660 and 4,590 metres respectively and run parallel to the Sequ River (色曲河), a tributary of the Lancang (澜沧江). Nearby glaciers supply their water. The lakes freeze around November and thaw around April.
