A monastery above the county seat
Yanduo Monastery (烟多寺) stands halfway up Camel Mountain (骆驼山), north of the county seat. Its predecessor was founded in 1680; after an eighteenth-century fire, the monks moved to Yanduo and rebuilt. The collection includes old thangkas, scriptures written in gold powder and carefully worked Buddhist images.
Carved rocks and a snowy summit
At Luorong Gorge (罗荣沟), in Wangka Township (王卡乡), carvings adapt the natural shapes of the rocks. Figures include ten-faced Guanyin (十面观世音), Shakyamuni (释加牟尼) and Princess Wencheng (文成公主). Dema Snow Mountain (德玛雪山), in Xuewa Village (雪瓦村), rises to 5,480 metres. Snow remains on its summit throughout the year, while rhododendrons bloom halfway up the mountain in spring and forest and streams occupy its foot.
