Letters cut into birch
A November 2023 Xinhua report describes the craft teacher Zepei (泽培) guiding apprentices here. He began learning at twelve and represents the ninth generation of his family’s practice. Carvers choose red birch without cracks and undertake more than ten stages, including cutting and reinforcement. Each character must match its template; familiarity with Tibetan calligraphy is part of the skill. Boluo Guze woodblock-making (波罗古泽刻版制作技艺) entered the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008.
Log houses at Gangto
Gangto Village (岗托村), beside National Highway 317, has houses locally called bengwa (崩瓦). Their interlocking-log construction dispenses with upright columns and large beams, a separate use of timber from Waichong’s workshops’ finely cut printing blocks.
