About Tiantong Temple
Its rebuilt Ming-and-Qing-style ensemble runs through the mountain gate and Heavenly Kings Hall toward the Mahavira Hall, with bell and drum towers to either side. In the main hall, the three Buddha images and the flanking arhats create a more specific focus than the temple’s long list of patrons. The monastery is also associated with the exchange between Chinese Chan and Japanese Zen traditions, and remains a place of worship.
The temple preserves more than thirty stone inscriptions dating from the Song through the Qing. Its metal bell, cast in 1934, carries several Buddhist texts. A metal cooking pot made in 1641 measures 2.36 metres in diameter and weighs about two tonnes, retaining a material record of communal food preparation.
In 1983, the monastery was designated a National Key Buddhist Temple in Han Chinese Areas. It became a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 2006. Its history of overseas exchanges also places it among the component sites of the Maritime Silk Road project on China's World Cultural Heritage Tentative List.
